Writers, on Writing.I never know what I think about something until I read what I've written on it. Everywhere I go, I'm asked if the universities stifle writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do. Say all you have to say in the fewest possible words, or your reader will be sure to skip them; and in the plainest possible words or he will certainly misunderstand them. I believe more in the scissors than I do in the pencil. Vigorous writing is concise. The difference between the right word and the nearly right word is the same as the difference between lightning and the lightning bug. What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure. Get the write stuff. Contact Jake Poinier at jpoinier@cox.net |
